The Quitterer Group has identified the Membrane Palmitoylated Protein 1 (MPP1) as a protein, which promotes heart failure in transgenic MPP1-mice and in different murine models with major cardiovascular risk factors. MPP1 could contribute to aging-induced cardiac degeneration because it is also up-regulated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of aged humans.

Our studies elucidated a detrimental function of the Membrane Palmitoylated Protein 1 (MPP1) in the heart. MPP1 causeds heart failure in the transgenic mouse model overexpressing MPP1. MPP1 was also elevated in hearts from different experimental mouseo models, which replicate all major cardiovascular risk factors, and in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of aged humans. MPP1 caused cardiac degeneration by up-regulation of the heart failure-promoting angiotensin II type 1 receptor in hearts of transgenic MPP1-mice (in vivo) and in transfected HEK-cells overexpressing MPP1 (in vitro).
