The history of vasoactive GPCR aggregation

After more than a decade of intense scientific discussions, a paradigm shift in GPCR pharmacology was finally accepted.

More than a decade ago, we discovered the pathophysiological relevance of GPCR aggregation external page(Nature 2000, 407, 94-98 and external pageNature Medicine 2001, 7, 1003-1009).

Our initial discoveries published in Nature and Nature Medicine raised intense discussions worldwide, because the findings contradicted the established concept, which stated that GPCRs function as monomers.

After more than a decade, the paradigm shift in GPCR pharmacology was finally accepted in 2013, when an independent research team from the University of South Carolina, USA, confirmed our initial findings external page(J. Biol. Chem. 2013, 288, 18872-18884).
